12/16 1 John 2:10

10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.

Jesus told His disciples to abide in Him (John 15:4). Jesus is the light of the world. To remain in Him is to remain in the light. The world's understanding of things is darkness. It is disconnected from eternal realities and cannot see what is of true worth. In Christ there is light to see things as they truly are. In His light we can discern what is worthless and what is of value (Psalm 36:9). That is why He wants us to continually remain in Him.

The Scriptures give us signs of authentic Christianity. One of the chief signs of those who abide in the light is love for the family of God. Another natural expression of that love is concern for the eternal destiny of others. While it is not our duty to determine who is in the light and who is not, there are times when we need to discern the difference. Whether or not we are showing love for others is a helpful guideline in our own life to make sure we are walking in the light. Our own hearts can deceive us, but this truth can set us straight.

Genuine love will make every effort to not stumble others. We watch our own speech and actions to be careful not to turn others away from the Lord. We readily give up our freedoms and become all things to all people in order to draw them to Christ (1 Corinthians 9:22). This is the love of God manifested in our lives toward the eternal souls of others.

Consider: Our interaction with others will have eternal consequences for good or evil. May the grace of God help us to always gently point others to the light of Christ.
